Pop-ups, sound and notifications on your devices

Choose how the site tells you about something new: pop-ups, a sound, and notifications on your phone or computer even when the site is closed.

1. Open Account settings and find "In-app notifications", or press "Notification settings" at the bottom of the bell's list.
2. Pop-ups are on to start with: a short message in the corner of the screen when something new arrives while you are signed in. Switch them off here if you prefer.
3. The sound is off to start with. Switch it on to hear a soft chime when something new arrives. Your choices are saved on your account, so they apply on every device.
4. To be told even when the site is closed, press "Turn on for this device" under "Notifications on this device", and allow notifications when your browser asks. It asks only when you press the button.
5. A notification on your device only says how many things are new, never who sent them or what they say, so it is safe on a lock screen.
6. Your devices with notifications on are listed with the date each was added. Press Remove to turn one off, or "Turn off for this device".
7. On an iPhone or iPad, notifications from a website work only when the site is added to the Home Screen. Pop-ups on the site still work.

• On a shared computer, turn notifications off for that device before you leave.
