Privacy choices (cookies and analytics)

FAQs

Privacy choices, on every page, changes what this site may remember on your device and whether your visits are counted.

  1. Press Privacy choices at any time: the tab with the shield at the edge of the page, the shield in the header, or the link at the bottom of every page.
  2. Strictly necessary keeps you signed in and cannot be switched off. Preferences remembers your language in this browser. Analytics counts visits and pages, never who you are. There is no marketing category.
  3. Your light or dark theme is not remembered: the next visit starts with your device's setting.
  4. Until you choose, the options start off — except where the law lets a site start them on (for example the United States, Australia and New Zealand), where Preferences and Analytics are shown switched on. Even there, no visit is counted until you have made a choice with Analytics on.
  5. If you decline analytics, your visit is not counted at all.
  6. If you allow analytics, your browser keeps one small visit record (the day, week and month of your last counted page, and that you have been here before), and each page adds to daily totals: the kind of page, the language, your country (and region and city, if our network provider reports them), your kind of device and browser, where the visit came from, and whether you were signed in and as which kind of member. Nothing that identifies you is kept. Withdrawing analytics deletes the record at once; "See everything we store" lists it.
